Salzburg to Munich

In the Mozartplatz by the statue to Mozart. I hope that the car meets with his approval!

Impression of Salzburg

We began the day by taking a morning drive around Salzburg. We then had Viennese coffee and apfelstrudel at the Cafe Tomaselli, a konditerei that was already open during Mozart's lifetime. A brief shopping expedition along the famous Getreidegasse street (Mozart's birthplace is located here) and then time for one more lunch at the Stiegl Keller.

View from the Stiegl Keller of old town Salzburg

"Mad" King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps.
This castle is the inspiration for and was the basis of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland

We left the Sheraton Salzburg and headed into Bavaria. Our checkpoint would be Neuschwanstein Castle, the model for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. From there and motoring through some pretty foul rain and hail we made our way to the metropolis of Munich, home of Oktoberfest and more importantly for this car guy: BMW.

Hey Robert and Jennifer! I just caught up to your latest postings of your trip and it looks incredible. So many great historical sites and wonderful food. This blog will be a great way to remember such a unique trip. What an incredible opportunity to do all of this. Great to see the Rizzos on here too. This is quite a feat to cover such land and follow through with a daily log; I'm sure it's been an effort to keep up. It's a treat to keep up with your daily ramblings, especially the historical spots.

Things here are the same. Your cars seem to be okay at home--no wild winds wreaking havoc on the car covers lately. I hear your dog when I visit my parents. He's developed a mature bark reminiscent of Adel. I gave my own 3 Series and Sport1000 a good cleaning--good enough for pictures now. Stephanie's one step away from completing her Masters. Mike Rizzo just left for Lake Havasu for his annual week-long all-liquids (water and beer) vacation. The Angels are still in first place. American League won the All-Star Game and Vlad Guerrero won the HR Derby [sorry no pictures or footage to post]. And I've had lots of rest and beer (try Blue Moon Beglian ale).

Anyhow, just thought I'd keep in touch as I've been keeping quite busy and not near a computer much. Not sure if I'll see you when you return as I'll be travelling to Tennessee sometime next weekend (7/28). I won't be bringing my computer to blog my own ramblings though. But, I think you'll be home just in time to catch The Borne Ultimatum (opens 8/3). Hope all is well with you two and that the rest of the trip is magnificent and safe.

Vernon.

Nothing like a good apple, I think that's what apfel means, pastry to start the day off. Kittie and I did the castle on the mountain thing, had lunch there... what a view! Kittie and I took the train to Munich. What a beautiful area. Sorry to hear you had some foul weather.

I was a bit surprised that you haven't gone faster. My son-n-law, Martijn, and I in some sort of Golf turbo diesel rocket he had got way up there when they lived in Germany. With that rocket you drive, gotta be challenging in Germany with all those high speed roads and very aggressive drivers to keep speed down. I had thought all autobahns in Germany were open for any speed but when I was there, 2 years ago, I did notice many speed traps and speed limit signs, especially around and coming into cities.

I'm a very light member of SCMM. I was a very early member, 2003, but dropped out after a short period. Thought I'd give it another shot late last year, more of a business decision, been interesting to say the least. Met many really nice folk but I'm really not that involved as I find some things kinda silly. As Kittie said, "You don't play that well with others, why join again?" And then I offered my services, as a designer, to the club... well, that lasted less than a month, sorry to say. They do have many fun things that are a kick to do like karting and other weekend stay over get together runs. My background is S.C.O.R.E./La Rana off road racing. I drove a class 12 off road car for 8 years. That class no longer exists as I knew it as the Chenowth MiniMag race car no longer exists. It was a kick though!

Well have a great day, wherever it takes you, and keep the shiny side up. I gotta assemble more products for MITM in Colorado coming up very quickly in August.

Vernon,

Nice to hear from you!

It's good to hear that all is as it should be back at home. Hopefully you'll have some time to get on the Sport 1000 when you return from Tennessee... I'll be ready to hit the mountain twisties! Did you manage to get the bar risers installed?

Anyway, pass my greetings to all back home and I'll see you soon!

Robert

rb,

Yes, we have rain in the area but at least it isn't nearly as heavy nor devastating as the rains that are hitting the UK.

We'll see if I can get the car up to a higher speed. That'll heavily depend on autobahn conditions and Jennifer's comfort level. The MINI should top out around the 140+ mph mark. Don't know if that will happen fully loaded.

I have track experience, although not recently, as a competitor and graduate of the Skip Barber Formula Dodge 2.0 series. I've driven Laguna Seca, Las Vegas Speedway, and Lime Rock Park (Connecticut) in the Barber formula cars.
